    Orange Bike
       Project:

Lending bikes to students for free!

Help us build the Bike Library—Ask your family if they can spare that extra bike in the garage!

Waitlist:

The wait list is getting rather long and we don't have the manpower to fix bikes fast enough right now, but if you come and volunteer, you will be pushed up on the waitlist and can get a bike sooner. However, volunteering does not necessarily mean fixing bikes, there are many different types of projects that need to be done.

--- Urban Bicycling Classes ---

Learn the basics of riding a bicycle in the city!

Find out how to avoid the most common dangers. Gain confidence and become empowered to ride in traffic comfortably. Know your rights! Know your responsibilities!

Learn how to plan your route, keep your bike in shape, dress for riding, secure your bike, and get involved in the local bicycling community. Learn how to use your bicycle for everyday transportation. Find out what other resources are available to you in Austin and online.

Ask a seasoned expert your burning questions on how to use a bicycle in the city!

--- UT Bicycle Planning ---

Another project this semester is to coalesce a proactive effort by the UT community for a bicycle plan at UT and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Locations:

OBP bike cage: The OBP bike shop, aka "The Cage," is located in the UT Guadalupe parking garage on San Antonio Street, between 16th and 17th Streets (click here for map). The OBP bike cage is inside the garage on the ground floor in the southeast corner.  We have cage hours Mondays, 6-9PM, and Saturdays, 10-1PM.

The car entrance to the garage is on 17th St.  Entrance is free for the first half-hour.  Metered on-street parking is available on San Antonio St.

Who we are:

We are a subcommittee of the Campus Environmental Center at the University of Texas that provides students with more sustainable choices for transportation. We have volunteers, enthusiasm and access to used bikes, tools, and a space in which to work. Through our program, students are able to “check out” a bike, just as if they were checking out a library book, and keep the bike for the entire semester. This allows many students to make their bike their primary mode of transportation.

Why this matters:

Providing bikes to students benefits both students and society. A student who checks out a bike has cheap transportation and is able to lead an active lifestyle, promoting good health throughout life. Society benefits by having fewer cars on the road—a huge problem in Austin—and fewer pollutants in the air.

College is an important time for students to become interested in cycling. During college, students acquire behaviors and attitudes that they retain for the rest of their lives. Showing them how transportation can be fun, healthy and sustainable will have positive long term impacts.
