Why Should I Get Involved with the CEC?

  • To make a concrete difference on environmental issues.
  • To meet other environmentally-minded students.
  • To develop leadership skills. The CEC has an awesome leadership development program, with trainings, mentoring, and extensive support for new leaders.
  • To learn about environmental issues, on campus and off. We regularly host lectures and events about a variety of environmental issues.
  • To explore career options.
  • To work on achievable, local projects.

Trash to Treasure - Collects donations from students during move out and recycles them in a campus-wide garage sale.
Publicity - Helps promote CEC events and projects through advertising campaigns, graphic design, and newspaper articles.
Events - Plans a yearly environmental conference (the Earth Summit) and two fun festivals (for America Recycles Day in the fall and Earth Day in the spring). Assists with logistics for all CEC events.
Recycling - Organizes UT's student-run plastic, aluminum, and ink cartridge recycling program.
Food - Works with the Division of Housing and Food Service to purchase sustainable food for the dining halls. Educates students about the benefits of eating local, organic, and sustainable food.
Students for a Sustainable Campus - Works with administrators to promote sustainability policies on campus.
Sustainability Networking - Conducts a variety of outreach efforts including alumni relations, networking among other student organizations, and staff and faculty.
Orange Bike Project - Provides sustainable transportation for students on campus.
Gardening - Maintains and develops new student-run gardens on campus.
Green Greeks - Works with existing coalition of Greeks to conduct competitions and sustainability improvements in Greek houses.
Litter Reduction - Runs the Adopt-an-Acre program, where student groups volunteer to clean up campus, and plans an annual campus-wide cleanup called Beautiful U Day.
Energy - Promotes energy conservation education, particularly the annual UT Energy Challenge.
Climate Action Planning - Works with Students for a Sustainable Campus to design a plan for climate neutrality at UT.

Environmental Leadership Institute - The ELI is a leadership training specifically designed for students interested in the environment. GREAT preparation for student leadership positions of any type.
EcoReps Program - Live in an on- or off-campus residence hall? Want to learn more about the environment and how you impact it? Then join the EcoReps Program! Participants will learn about the environment and will then share this information with others in your residence hall through monthly activities, like putting up flyers and holding events.
